Quad Biking Adventures in Marrakech
If you are planning a short trip to Morocco, you may find it difficult to find things in Morocco that would fit into your limited amount of time. Marrakech has a lot to offer but, at some point, it may be worthwhile to spend at least a day outside the city. One of the most popular things to do is to head into the Sahara Desert, but Morocco is defined by more than just its famous golden sandy dunes. The country has the largest natural park in North Africa, beautiful landscapes, and great opportunities for outdoor activities. So, if you’re looking for something a little closer to home or you don’t want to spend hours driving to the desert, there are still plenty of cool things to do. One of them is quad-biking in the deserts surrounding Marrakech.
Quad biking is a great adrenaline-fueled activity, perfect for adventure enthusiasts and those looking for a different experience in Morocco. Many tour companies offer an activity that will take you on an adventure through beautiful and varied terrains away from the busy medinas of Marrakech. From palm groves and rocky tracks to the desert itself, the quad bike tours offer stunning landscapes and vistas. Part country, part urban, the vicinity of Marrakech has a lot to offer. They are suitable for both novice and expert quad bikers, as well as those looking to enjoy some great indoor activities in Morocco during the hot summer months. Some of the routes pass Berber villages and experiencing a typical Berber breakfast is part of the offer.
The Allure of the Moroccan Desert
Among the different climates that the Moroccan territory exhibits, the most typical and most attractive to tourists is the arid climate of the desert, especially that of Sahara, located in the southeast of the country. There, dunes of golden sands fall into the imagination of every adventurer in search of authenticity; a sea of moving sands shaped by the wind. There, the simple life of the nomads delights lovers of sharing experiences, the discreet and minimalist beauty of a book mineral landscape captivates artist-photographers, the overwhelming night sky of spurting stars enchants dreamers and stargazers, the magical moment of sunrise or sunset, that of the shadow play on the sand, fascinates lovers of slow travel. Desert hikes on the back of camels are a classic tourist trip. Reserved for those who have patience, it allows for the discovery of the desert in a more authentic way, taking your time. You can also go there on foot, especially for small ones near the dunes. Vestige of the old caravans, the flash treks are done in a salt saw on the camel’s back. Quads and buggies are used to run footprints in the sand and explore the hinterland: valleys, gorges, kasbahs and palm groves. Always located near a desert passage, a palm grove offers the most virulent contrast: the freshness of its intra-ecosystem, with the date palm and the willows that develop all year round due to the firmness of the water table, and the surrounding arid landscapes. Guided by Berber guides, the hikes in mountain or desert bikes around the historic towns of the High Mountains or the Atlantic are an added value for this region. Located at the foot of the desert massif, these old kasbahs, still in a state of conservation, are stunned by the sordid reds and browns, incandescent at dusk and dawn, or soothed during the day by the nuance of beiges.
Types of Quad Biking Tours Available
Quad biking is an exhilarating way to explore the Moroccan desert. A quad bike is an ATV with four large wheels, usually weighing around 500 pounds. Quad biking tours typically depart from Marrakech and drive out to the desert on the outskirts of Marrakech, where the tours begin. Although you could take a leisurely drive through the desert, bouncing over dunes, sand, and rocks in a quad bike is much more fun and memorable! Experience some of the highlights and local highlights of the Moroccan desert – excitement, open space, stunning views and a unique way of discovering the local way of life.
When booking a quad biking adventure during your trip, you are given a choice from a couple of different trip times, tour lengths, and even types of tours. You can choose a quick hour-long ride through the desert in the morning, maybe after breakfast, or you can get more immersed in the scenery and “culture” of the area and go on a half-day or even full-day tour. And while these quad biking adventures are so much fun on their own, you can even combine a quad biking tour with a camel ride through the Moroccan desert, in some of the tours.
So which quad biking tour is best for you? The types of quad biking adventures you can take depends on how much time you have, what type of experience you want and your level of experience on the bikes. Most smaller guided tours on the bikes only provide equipment rental for those 15 and older while the larger companies allow drivers to be 12-years-old on the bikes, both require parental supervision. However, there are family-friendly tours offered on quads specially designed with two seats, where younger children: kids from age 6 up to 12 are welcomed to ride along with their parents during the duration of the tour.
Family-Friendly Tours
Marrakech has so many family friendly activities that you’ll have the best time ever! Quad biking certainly isn’t just for the thrill-seekers. That’s not to say that these tours aren’t thrilling but these are also some fun, family friendly quad biking options to look into. Quad biking is also a fantastic family day out activity! So if adventure is what you’re seeking, then look no further! With excitement levels peaking, we guarantee your family, and especially your kids, will love splashing through the mud, speeding down wide-open gravel paths, racing against each other, and so on.
It’s an absolute thrill to ATV around the Agafay desert! Get away from the hustle and bustle of Marrakech, exploring areas you merely wouldn’t see otherwise. Quad biking in the Agafay desert with your kids and family is even better! The Agafay desert is also a somewhat unique landscape for Morocco – close views of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, and rocky in color, it’s literally nothing like the dunes of the Sahara! But why we love it for families is how accessible and family-friendly it is! Unlike the dunes, the Agafay desert has wide-open paths, making it so easy for your children to race around without any worries.
The desert also feels very safe, and with so much to see besides sand dunes, it’s also 90 minutes closer to the fun cities of Marrakech than the dunes. Overall, we love it for family quad biking since there are thousands of unknown paths, great scenery, and also it’s super accessible from Marrakech! Plus our policy is safety first when it comes to quad biking in the Agafay desert with kids and families, so rest assured your quad biking experience will be a family friendly, safe adventure!
Adrenaline-Fueled Adventures
Although you’ll have an amazing time riding quad bikes no matter what tour you choose, the really adventurous quad biking tours in Marrakech will take you off the beaten track. If you’re looking for a longer and wilder ride, we recommend one of the quad biking tours that are available through the Agafay Desert. Not far from Marrakech, the Agafay Desert is a unique stony desert that is both beautiful and bare. It is also made all the more special by the presence of the Atlas Mountains. On our ‘Agafay Desert and Atlas Mountains Quad Biking Adventure’, after a short briefing on how to use and drive your quad bike, we set off together in the direction of the Atlas Mountains. On the way, we ride through the beautiful Agafay Desert with its dusty slopes and rocky outcrops, and we stop to take pictures of the particularly beautiful view of the Atlas Mountains. If you are lucky, you will have the chance to see the snow-covered peaks of the mountains. After a break in a typical Berber village, we continue into the hills about the desert that are dotted with olive trees and Berber farms before heading back to base.
The thing that makes quad biking special and fun is the vehicles themselves, and it is on the longer tours that you really get the chance to discover their potential. Have more fun during your rides with your friends and discover the technical characteristics of the 400cc Yamaha Raptor bikes we provide: single-seater quads with speed and a good feature for mountain rides. For extra accessibility, you can also choose a buggie that is adapted for passengers. On all the tours above, we will change the route on the way back so that you can discover even more different landscapes and have even more fun steering your bike.
Essential Gear for Quad Biking
As with any adventure activity, choosing the right gear for a quad biking tour can enhance your experience and help keep you safe and dry. Some companies offer guided tours over rougher terrain and through deserts, while others take you on a lap of the racetrack at speed. Whatever you choose, you need to spend some time thinking about what you’re going to wear. Coupled with the increased amount of dirt kicked up by the tires, riding a quad will expose you to inclement weather, and potentially lead to some major scrapes and bruises from a few slightly rough landings.
Your base layer should be quick drying and moisture-wicking. Synthetic materials work best, but if you’re sensitive to the smell of sweat, check that they’re treated to keep odor at bay. Stick to long sleeves and long pants, and still possibly wear a jacket if it’s cooler. If you’re going to be doing in excess of an hour on a quad bike, bring a neck gaiter. The wind caused by the speed will dry out your throat, and exposed skin and make you susceptible to windburn. Because of the nature of riding a quad, many people wear waterproof and breathable lightweight shell jackets. While they’re generally a good option, the downside is that you’ll only get wet from the rain–they do nothing to stop water from splashing up onto your chest, or mud from splatting against you from your buddy.
That’s where wearing old clothes and disposable ponchos have their advantages. Just bring a decent hat that can get dirty. The most important thing to remember is that no matter how you dress on the day, be prepared to get dirty, whether you’re going off-roading or running around a racetrack. Whether you’re bashing through sand dunes or racing around a narrow, muddy racetrack, wearing gloves is a good idea. Good gloves give you a consistent and secure touch and feel with the quad.
Your main equipment should include a helmet. Because quad bikes are technically motor vehicles and thus classified as road-going transport, it’s required to wear a helmet. Most quad companies offer helmets to use. Also required are goggles to protect your eyes from dirt debris and wind. You’ll most likely be provided with goggles as well. However, your tour company might allow you to bring your own.
Safety Guidelines for Quad Biking
Quad biking in Morocco is an exciting activity that comes with a certain level of risk. In order to ensure the safety of bikers, it is important to follow some basic guidelines. These safety regulations must be adhered to at all times particularly when you are riding with a tour company. All tours are led by experienced professionals, and it is important to listen to their instructions and communication throughout the tour. Be especially attentive to their advice when it comes to riding in a convoy. Ensure that your following distance is sufficient and that you do not accelerate at the wrong moment. If necessary, turn on the lights of your quad as most models are equipped for this.
As is the case with many adventure activities in Morocco, it is important to have a little prior experience before jumping on a quad. The initial feeling will certainly not be as overwhelming as with other activities. However, it is advisable to have suitable biking equipment. A helmet is crucial for every tour. Although guides are usually well aware of the dangers of falling in the case of quad biking, remember to wear your seatbelt. In the event of a crash, this can save your life. Furthermore, pay extra attention while riding in dry and muddy areas. Loss of support and falls are frequent. However, they are rarely serious as they are always in the soft sand or mud. Riding a quad bike is no joke. It is enough to give a wrong acceleration and go for a collision for which you will not be prepared, and the weight of a quad in free fall will make several consequences.
Exploring the Palmeraie Region
If you’ve visited Marrakech, you’ve likely heard of the famous Palm Grove – this is it! A huge park spanning over some ten thousand hectares at the entrance to the Imperial city, the Palmeraie is unique in the world. Alas, what once grew at the rate of one palm tree for every inhabitant of Marrakech – and was consequently named the “Palmeraie” – has now been greatly affected by the land speculation that has invaded the city. No matter: the original Palmeraie has survived, and discovering it with a quad bike is both fun and eco-friendly. Just a few kilometers from the busy east side of the historic capital of the south, the runners and motorbikes zip along paths lined with palm trees, some of which are over a millennium old! Leaving the city, we grab our helmets and bravely gear up on the powerful quads that will take us on these wild adventures.
With a big smile on our faces, we take the quads in hand. And it doesn’t take long before all of Marrakech and the city’s merchants hide in the dust behind us! Between the colors and scents of the countryside, we hurry at the speed of the engines and heartbeats on bizarre paths; we rush headlong into the gardens, scrumptious treats of the Marrakech population. The mounds and hills mark the rhythm of our ride, which we shift from one side to the other, as if drying clothes in the wind! With each turn of wheels, the sound of dueling engines speeds us up all over the place; the sleepy inhabitants of a bleating goat huddled under the shady palm trees brave the dust storm with a resigned look. In the middle of the palms, we explore the clusters of concrete villas, little by little abandoned by the rich, or sometimes luxurious hotels that have come up, stood up, and fallen into disuse. Are bikers are mad? Maybe. But the notion of eco tourist is much more appealing in this area of the world where tourist development is just beginning. And are these curiously dried mounds a palmer’s environmental disaster? Perhaps. But one thing is certain: we are looking for carefully. The place is simply magnificent!
The Agafay Desert Experience
Marrakech boasts proximity to several of Morocco’s vast areas of uninhabited land, and the Agafay desert is one of them. Located just 30 kilometers southwest of Marrakech, this almost lunar expanse is made of white stones and breathtaking hillocks, and surrounded by the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. Purely desert-like in terms of geography, the Agafay difference is apparent in its unique and diverse landscape: hillocks and ripple-effected stone layers bear witness to wind and water carving effects, making it a rare spot to explore. Experience exhilarating quad biking adventures along Agafay’s vast open spaces with your squad and ride over rugged terrain and across unique sandstone hillocks. Dash away over Agafay’s rippling rocks under whispered cotton-like clouds sucked into the sunset of unique sunset-hues before resting at sunset viewpoints sipping sweet mint tea. Enjoy BBQ dining or sunset dining followed by a show with dancers on a stage adjoining your private dining tent. Camp like nomads in a cheap selection- bask in the warmth of comforting bonfires and lie beneath the desert sky glittering with stars before stashing away all that stargazing modestly.
The Agafay desert is located at 30km from Marrakech in a valley protected by hills, with the Atlas mountains in the background. The quads will be accessible from the asphalt road to Lalla Takerkoust Dam via 5km of earthen tracks after a short briefing to brief you on how to handle the quads. Two guides will take care of you, at the head, and the rear of the group in case of a problem. The departure is at 10:30 a.m. or 2:30 p.m. depending on your choice. The ride will last about an hour and a half by quad across hills facing north and then descending towards the east to face the snow-covered peaks of the Atlas. The view is breathtaking across the valley full of olive and almond trees. The second part of the ride is a little more reckless on the ridges. 3 hours of stopovers visited on foot to admire the view and atmospheric sensations will wait for you before returning to the rental agency for lunch.
Top Quad Biking Trails Around Marrakech
With such a stunning, diverse landscape surrounding Marrakech, you can be sure to find some incredible quad biking routes; both for a casual adventure as well as adrenaline-pumping experiences. Below we’ve compiled a selection of our favorites.
8.1. Scenic Routes
The trails into the Asni Valley take you through lush green fields, passing pretty whitewashed villages and spots of local farmers tending to their crops, before heading into the foothills of the High Atlas, offering stunning views of the towering mountains behind. Along these routes, you can be sure to enjoy some stunning views of snow-capped peaks and lush green valleys, as well as a real taste of the local Berber culture of the region. You may even get a chance to stop at a remote local village and sip some mint tea or grab a bite with a local family. These day trips are a bit longer than the half-day tours offered with the quad biking adventures companies, as you will only be partaking in the quad biking adventure for part of the day; the majority of the day will be spent trekking through this remote area, which takes time. But these tours really do allow you to cover a lot more distance than standard walking treks, whilst also ensuring you get a real sense of what life is like in this beautiful valley.
8.2. Challenging Terrain
If you are looking for a good adrenaline rush, venturing into the Agafay desert outside of Marrakech is a great option. You can go off the beaten track; racing through the dry rocky riverbeds, between the hills of the small dunes on either side, climbing up the rocky hills, speeding along the flat plains or even getting lost along the dried salt lake. There is also the option of kicking it up a notch and trying a session of extreme quad biking; veering off the established tracks, whipping up dust and heading into the hills for some more heart-pounding fun. Perfect for those who like to go the extra mile; exploring some more beat up rocky dirt tracks rather than the standard tours.
Scenic Routes
Although the quad biking trails around Marrakech are definitely not the most exciting, they certainly are the most accessible and suitable for inexperienced riders. This makes them picturesque, since you go across plains, dried river beds, and real Berber villages in the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains. If you want a break from the heat of the city, quad biking is a good excursion. If you want a challenging ride, then look at the recommended at the end of this chapter. Your quad tour may lead you along open plains, desert-like gravels, through Berber villages, and through pine and eucalyptus woods. You will need to travel to the Agafay desert, some 40 km from Marrakech. The main trails are on a plateau, overlooking valleys with the Atlas Mountains on your right. You can do two trails here, one of 16 km and another of 34 km. The shorter one will take you around an hour and a half and the longer one, around 2 and a half hours. If you choose the longer trail, you will go right, toward the source of the lake from which Marrakech takes its water. The view is breathtaking, so be sure to take your camera. You could also do a combo tour, which consists of a first part of the trail dedicated to camel riding; then you are taken to a Berber village, in which you get the chance to try on the traditional djellaba; then, you go for some tea; and then you quad bike in the last part of the ascent. The excursion takes about 4 hours, and the trail is about 10 km long. Although it is a widespread excursion, it was liked very much.
Challenging Terrain
While that sounds fun, not all quad biking trails are easy, and when it gets rough, it can get really messy! Following off-road paths through narrow gorges, leaping over rocks, and blasting away through deep gravel pits can be a great way of having an adrenaline-fuelled adventure in Morocco. If you are up for the challenge, just go for it, a dip in the river will be awaiting you to wash off the dust! Despite being all about going fast, quad biking can be very technical too. Steep climbs, sharp corners and rocky passes will make every second seem like an eternity. Quad biking in the high Atlas mountains will be the highlight of any adrenalin seeking visitors’ Moroccan adventure. A wide open landscape, dramatic views, bends and straights, it’s all there for the taking! Just make sure the trip you booked has a beginner-level group or teach the tour guide a thing or two on how to mellow it out. While you may go faster over rough terrain than exploring the valley on horseback or camel, the quads surely can’t always be trusted with going as fast as you play the flat roads in the desert. Depending on how extreme the bumps are, it may not be such a safe way to travel. And at the end of the day, after 1-2 hours of going over and under bumps, your bumpy body may wish you preferred a trek with the nomads and mules over the rocky paths. So choose your terrain well – here are our favourite quad biking spots for sandy and rocky precision-relaxation!
What to Expect on a Quad Biking Tour
When you set out on a quad biking adventure in Marrakech, there are several aspects and practicalities that you need to know insight about. Covering both the practical matters and the terrain and sights you are likely to see during a tour, this post is designed to provide you wide knowledge of the quad biking experience and help you find the right Marrakech quad biking adventure for you. Practically, the quad biking tours described here leave from the Agafay Desert, located more than 25 kilometers from central Marrakech. Therefore, you’ll first have to transfer to the Agafay Desert using either a pre-arranged transfer or taxi. Although most tour operators include the transfer in the total price of the quad biking experience, some tours are listed without a transfer included, so be sure to double-check this before booking if you are planning on making your own way to the quad center. On average, expect to pay about 20-30 dirhams for a one-way transfer from Marrakech city center to the Agafay Desert. The actual quad biking part of your tour will take place mostly in the Agafay Desert, an area characterized by open, all-natural spaces of rocky dry earth, with hills rising and falling in the distance. During your quad biking tour, you will experience the beauty of the area as you make your way through trails more or less carved in the hills, off the beaten track. This is a unique experience and yet it is even more interesting due to the views over the desert-like landscape and the Atlas Mountains more in the distance. In case snow is still covering the peaks of the Atlas Mountains, make sure to ask your guide to take several breaks during the quad biking part so you can take pictures of the amazing contrast between the white snow-covered mountains and the desert landscape.
Tips for First-Time Quad Bikers
Getting to ride quad bikes is a terrific adventure, with excursions that promise to fill you with both excitement and joy as you feel the wind streaming through your hair while you journey through the countryside. However, if you have little experience with quad biking or are going for a ride for the first time, here are some tips for making your excursion the best it can be. 1. Dress for the Occasion – Protective head gear is provided by the quad biking excursion companies and is usually cool to wear. However, wear thick sneakers that cover your feet, a second layer of clothing, and avoid wearing sleeveless tops, shorts, or tight pants since getting dust on your bare skin can itch for a long time. 2. Topics to Talk About – Safety is an issue that needs to be reviewed before doing any sort of off-road transferring. Ensure that everyone knows how to use the brakes and follow any instructions given by the guide or you will be left behind in a cloud of dust. 3. Safety in the Quad Biking Excursion – Not to sound bossy, but please don’t be such a show-off driving the quad bike too fast in order to impress your friends! The quad bikes are heavy pieces of machinery and can go over rough terrain surfaces very quickly. Any sort of accident can cause serious injuries. 4. The Riding of a Quad Bike – As with any form of transportation, be sure to pay attention to any signals the guides are given. Careful how you ride or a really bumpy road will set your body vibrating which can get uncomfortable over time. 5. Riding in a Column – Riding equipment, travel straps, belts, gloves, cameras, and, of course, your surfing gear. Don’t attach any of it to the quad bike. Really. If you have to hang something off your body, inch it up so it is secure enough from getting stuck in between the body of the ATV and the wheel. The excitement and atmosphere of the excursion will add to your holiday enjoyment.
Cultural Considerations During Your Ride
Moroccans are very friendly and hospitable people. And while you are seeing the country, be sure not to be rude to anyone. Little rules of etiquette go a long way. Here are some tips for keeping your interactions positive: Be sure to greet and thank any locals you pass or encounter. A simple greeting followed by a thank you is more than enough to convey your sentiments. Don’t pull out your camera while driving through the countryside and take random pictures of people. That is considered rude in many cultures and it applies here as well. If you want to take a picture of someone, at least stop and ask them first. Most people are more than happy to pose! Don’t eat with your left hand as it is considered impolite. Eat only when invited to. Food is often offered when you visit someone’s house but don’t expect a meal if you happen to be passing through a village while on your quad bike tour. While wearing a helmet, the Moroccans will not be able to recognize you as tourists. They may say things (less than flattering) to each other about the “crazy foreigners on the quads.” Don’t be offended. They don’t actually mean any disrespect against you! Everyone is entitled to their opinion, right? Just keep in mind that, if you plan to ride near a village, be respectful of the residents, do not rev up your engines, and make excessive noise! If you are polite, they will appreciate you being there. Take the time to stop and chat with someone. Ask them what it’s like living there, how many children they have, if they have a farm, etc. They love to receive visitors.
The Best Time of Year for Quad Biking
Marrakech enjoys a warm climate which is dry year-round, but the summer months can be scorching, regularly exceeding 40 degrees centigrade. Therefore, if you are sensitive or dislike extreme heat, it is best to plan your quad biking adventure during winter or autumn, ideally between mid-October and mid-April. The quad biking season in Marrakech starts in spring as the temperatures become cooler. Early mornings can still be chilly, especially during November, December, and January, but the weather conditions are still suitable for quad biking. The desert surroundings are a stunning sight to admire, displaying hues of red with the mountains in the background.
April and May are the ideal times to explore the area around Marrakech, as you’ll enjoy a blazing sun but not the extreme heat of summer; you’ll also have the privilege of bright blue skies and longer tour times. Summer is, in a nutshell, not recommended for quad biking. The weather can be extreme, with temperatures regularly rising above 40°C. The combination of heat, humidity, and the laying around late is exhausting, and it can be dangerous. We recommend you stay hydrated and be mindful of your activity. Also, remember to protect yourself from the rays of the sun. If you’re used to extreme heat and sweat a lot, you can go quad biking all summer long. You’ll not be able to arrive fashionably late, but quad biking during the summer is definitely doable with the help of water.
Combining Quad Biking with Other Activities
A five-minute drive out of Marrakech will take you to a unique landscape. Here, lush oases are framed by mountains, rocky outcrops, and palm-cropped dunes! Picture riding across this magic setting on a quad bike, feeling the wind on your face, looking at fabulous sights, surrounded by hills, orchards, and the distant mountain chain. This is not a dream, it’s a feeling of freedom, a break in time, an escape from the busy life of today’s modern world. The quad biking experience can be combined with live action pictures, a camel ride, and some unique emotions, sandboarding, or simply crouching down on the fine sand…it’s up to you. The quality time spent with family or friends is what really matters. Camel Riding After being whisked off along the road, you arrive at the private estate. Arrive at the estate of a Berber family, where breakfast is served on the terrace overlooking the palm oasis, irrigated by the ancient irrigation system. You then ride to meet our camel. The camels are decorated with their best saddles. Camera on one side, guide on the other, the caravan sets out to walk among the palm trees, oats, the melon fields, up to the sand dunes. There, or a little higher up, the hill, refreshments are served, before heading back in the early afternoon, after 2 hours of quiet. Return to Marrakech to rejoin your hotel. This is a different kind of experience! Sandboarding Why not enjoy a little sandboarding while you are there? The sand dunes are only a ten-minute walk away from the house. They’re hardly steep, but it’s fun, and a good way of having a laugh! Climb up the hill on one side and glide down on your board. You can do it! It’s possible to make it a little more challenging. We have enough boards, so everybody can have a turn.
Camel Riding
Camel riding might seem like an obvious choice if you plan a quad biking combo tour in Marrakech, but there’s more to it than you think. Camels are used by the Berber people as transport for centuries, and riding one is a unique and memorable adventure. While we have long ago moved onto faster modes of transport, there’s still something very special about going camel trekking into the desert and watching the smooth motion of the camel, as well as adapting to it. Since Marrakech’s desert is mostly arid flat with sparse palm groves, you need to travel a distance to the north to search for the best camel trekking tours. Luckily, most of these arrangements allow you to go quad biking before or after riding on a camel before heading back to Marrakech. This way, you can enjoy both activities while getting the best of both worlds. We usually suggest you go camel riding first because you’d want to ride the camels at sunset if you only have a day. And a rapid return trek with the sun in your face over the blacked out on overpriced women’s fashion choices isn’t the best way to end your quad biking group tour. Another option is to go camel trekking near Agafay, and then travel via quad bike back to your accommodation in Marrakech. A typical excursion would take something between 30 and 90 minutes. While it might look easy at first, you don’t just hop on and off the camel, and it is quite an experience to see others do that! Camels are very tall so getting on and off can be a bit daunting. It’s also quite an effort for the camels, so behavior is essential while in transit on their backs. There is great photo potential as well, especially if you stop for a drink and relax at a secluded area with posh tents used as temporary stops.
Environmental Impact of Quad Biking
The primary impact of quadbikes is the noise and pollution of their two-stroke engines, aptly demonstrated by the racket created by a quaddie taking off from a stop. Quad bikes are one of the largest sources of hydrocarbons emission in the transportation sector, as they don’t have strict emission standards. With little to no road use, the money pit all-expenses-included quad biking adventure is not quite as trashable as riding ATVs around. They also tend to dig rather deep ruts into the sand, which require a great deal of rain to be filled again.
The future of the quaddie rides in Morroco is tied to the tourism development. With the government’s objective of imposing a new architectural and urbanistic identity in the country, focusing on the preservation of their own landscapes, it is doubt that the development of mass tourism on the very places they go to ride will soon continue. The very principal of attraction cannot continue being based on the contrast with ‘modern’ standards, but can lead to the progressive concession of tourist privileges if they want to preserve their culture and environmental integrity.
Quad biking is cherished by a few intrepid travelers, the ones lucky enough to have jumped the boat for hot surf the Atlantic Coast or remake the film map of Morocco for those who weren’t so keen on mountain biking, nor trekking fanatics. I know, I know – our Moroccan quaddie team is full fun, while there are other adventures where fate is risk. But at what cost? That dreadful knowledge that you are helping on the destruction of the pristine places you enjoy so much, these ruins we have been immunized to ignore. Perhaps quad biking should only be reserved to assistance vehicles, and people inclined to Adventure could manage to hitch a lift.
Local Regulations and Permits
Before setting out to explore the magnificent local desert, visitors should consider that, in Morocco, the consumption of alcohol is prohibited by law and any offenses will be punished severely. Possession of narcotics is also severely punished. Driving without a seatbelt is subject to a fine. Driving without a helmet is also subject to a fine. It is not allowed to ride a quad bike on public roads. The driver must have a driving license for the vehicle category he is driving. Such decisions fall exclusively within the competence of the authorities. Passengers are driving at their own risk. Riding passenger quad bikes is only allowed in designated areas. Exhausts should be equipped with a muffler. Breaking this rule is punishable by a fine. Public drinking is prohibited. Breaking this rule is punishable by a fine.
All companies that organize excursions with passengers are obliged to sign a contract with a travel agency that will be at the disposal of passengers during the excursion. All work conditions will be stipulated in this contract. The excursion may be organized only after signing a contract, which must also contain a number of authorizations granted by the authorities. Breaking this rule is punishable by fines not only for tourists but also for companies organizing excursions. Companies that do not possess the proper permits will be considered illegitimate. The relevant authorities reserve the right to deprive individuals and agencies of their privileges at any time for whatever reason.
Choosing the Right Quad Biking Company
When choosing a quad biking company, you should take into consideration your level of experience, the track you wish to ride, whether or not you want to ride in a group, and how many people you are with. Some quad biking companies are located more in the city center and offer you riding in the Palmeraie area, while other companies are located more in the south of Marrakech and offer longer and more interesting rides through the Agafay desert and surrounding areas. Some companies have much nicer and more interesting tracks than others. If you have never been on a quad bike before, not only should you choose a reputable company and one with high quality gear, but you should also make sure you have the necessary insurance in case anything happens.
Many of the quad biking companies are located just outside of Marrakech, so you will be riding both on a small gravel track and also on the road to and from the quad bike center. The road isn’t very busy but you still need to be careful. If you have your own transport, or if you plan to hire a car for your stay in Marrakech, it is worth checking out the Agafay area where a lot of companies are located. Contact a few of them to discuss where you would like to ride, whether you want a private tour or are okay with a group, and how long you want to ride. You can then compare the prices and service levels before making a decision. Several activities can also be combined together to save some money, like visiting a nearby camel farm or going on a hot air balloon tour.
Customer Reviews and Experiences
Customer reviews and experiences are important when booking a quad biking adventure in Marrakech. Feedback from previous customers can give you a clear idea of what to expect, including the quality of the experience and customer service. Below are considerations relating to both the experiences highlighted and the type of experiences to look for.
There are around 90 different companies offering quad biking adventures in Marrakech, so it is difficult to navigate recent reviews to get a clear picture of each. However, some experiences highlighted tend to recur more than others. For example, various itineraries suggest a visit to an Argan oil factory; do your research and find out what the consensus about that is first should you not want to do that. Other feedback suggests that the best experiences are those that are private tours. Being in a small group and accompanied by your own instructor can lead to far more personalized experiences and better ones at that. The feedback also suggests that the uses of the title ‘adventure’ or ‘adventures’ can be misleading; hiring a quad bike for the day may not be as adventuristic as you may think, and may instead feel like renting a car.
Actually going on a tour designed for you can make all the difference, especially as the quad biking itself can take less than an hour. Also remember that quad biking is not for everyone. Performing on challenging terrain can be tiring enough as it is, so some customers suggest that there can be too many mistakes to go around to be safe. While a little bit of difficulty is welcome, just be thoughtful when it comes to which package you choose. Read the fine print and—should there be added options—consider looking at those customer reviews to double-check which options to book for that coveted experience!
Photography Tips for Your Quad Biking Adventure
When you are riding along in your quad, carefree and with the wind in your hair, is when you suddenly realize that you are having the times of your life BUT have no one to capture it, but yourself! Here are my tips for taking some pretty awesome photos of yourself quad biking through the desert. -Ride With Someone! – The best way to capture the moment is to have someone in front of you (and ideally at some distance) riding in the same direction. Don’t impede your photographer with what you’re doing, but you should make a few poses and gestures, and get different angles and framing from them. Try looking back, or a full of laughs and trying to keep the bike straight. It’ll be a lot of fun! -Use a GoPro – For amateur and pro quad bikers alike, GoPro cameras are the internet-famous 1st person Point of View cameras that are perfect for any kind of active holiday activity. It can be mounted on a helmet, chest, or sports photo holders, making it the perfect photo partner to accompany you throughout your desert adventure! It’s small and waterproof, and incredibly tough- perfect for any stress your Quad Biking Adventure may throw at it! -Bring a Friend – When Quad Biking, it’s just as difficult to take an action photo as it is for skiing or snowboarding! For either activity, if you ask a friend to meet you at the location you want to be photographed at and have them take your photo while you come in or out of the scene, the problem is solved! Sure, there will be a little more coordination involved, but on the other hand, your friend can choose a better timing, lighting, and composition to capture your most epic shot.
Quad Biking for Different Skill Levels
While some adventure sports like sky diving or scuba diving require specialized skills and training, a quad biking adventure is something that doesn’t require any such specialty. Irrespective of age or sex, anyone can ride an ATV as long as they are physically fit to ride the vehicle. Even little children and old people can enjoy quad biking but in supervised conditions. Quad biking is an adventurous outdoor activity that can be done individually or in groups. They are versatile and can be ridden on different terrains like mud, mountains or deserts. Most locations for quad biking around the world would be rental ATV organizations that would provide you with ATVs on rent. Some of them provide ATVs for different skill levels. If you are a beginner or family wanting to go quad biking, longer tours through the plains are generally available, but be warned these are normally very busy with tours and have nothing more thrilling than plains. If you are inexperienced and want to do a short, exciting ATV ride, then the area around is generally not a choice of location. Be prepared to do a shallow, scenic route without the thrill of experience for long. But it is safe, a unique thing to do for families, and an enjoyable experience. You may even get a puppy to keep you company on your trip! For people with previous ATV experience, some companies will allow you to take a guided ATV ride off to the side of the trail, through the chickens, or onto a gully. To experience the full thrill of an ATV ride, this is exactly what you want!
Post-Ride Activities in Marrakech
After an exhilarating day of quad biking in the Moroccan desert, you may want to partake in some of the other activities that Marrakech has to offer. Whether you wish for relaxing or thrilling, the city will not seize to impress! Hamman and Spa: You are in Morocco, the land of traditions; so take a part of this culture and give yourself a hammam scrub and a soothing massage, at least once during your visit! A hammam is an old tradition known for cleansing and purifying the body. The scrubbing will remove the dead skin cells and unclog the pores, the results of which will be glowing and supple skin. Marrakech is teeming with hamams and spas catering to all budgets, offering packages for one or two, with everything from the scrub to the massage and a cup of mint tea afterward. Moroccan Cooking Class: Become acquainted with the Moroccan spices and prepare a typical dish such as tagine. Those classes will teach you how to cook an entire meal, except the dessert (the Moroccan traditional pastry is so sweet that you will have a hard time tasting it). Cooking classes in Marrakech are based on small groups and large amounts of ingredients, including a lot of spices. Camel Ride: Take a part of the Saharan lifestyle and go for a short experience riding a camel through the Palmeraie area of Marrakech. The ride is quite short (about 30 minutes), and the most comfortable is sitting on the big and soft bumps. This ride will be for sure a unique experience to have fun and discover the special riding style on the bemuse.
Cost Considerations for Quad Biking Tours
Quad-biking tours are among the more pricey excursions on the short list of activities available to visitors to Marrakech. Prices vary considerably, depending on what it is you’re after. Expect to pay around €50 for a half-day tour under the sun, with afternoon prices understandably less expensive. In the high season, days tend to run on the long side while in the low season they often only run around five hours — this is due to the colder days and comparatively early sunsets of winter. Your best chance of negotiating a half-day trip is at dawn or sunset. Most itineraries include breakfast or dinner.
Longer tours of three days or more in the mountains are priced per person: you can expect to pay between €180 and €450, depending on the number in your party and your personal preferences. Some companies also rent out quad bikes and offer only the maps, but these aren’t recommended for first-timers. Maps you get are riddled with warnings about hidden killer drops or stretches of rocky tracks that just scream accident waiting to happen. Quad biking companies providing the bikes seem to think they’ve done their best by dropping you in the mountains, and apparently provide no real back-up service when accidents occur. They doubtless save money by not having to pay staff to accompany groups, apparently assuming you’ll all have the required trail experience. Many companies include breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Health Benefits of Quad Biking
Quad biking is a great way to stay fit, exercise and have fun at the same time. Crossing rough terrain on a quad can burn up to 250 calories in just thirty minutes, while using other muscles helps you manage your weight and stay in shape. Your core back, stomach and leg muscles all benefit from maintaining the posture, especially the inner thigh, hamstring and calf muscles, as well as the upper and mid back muscles, as you wrestle with the quad through mud, water, ruts and climbs.
All this could help burn off that extra treat every so often or allow for big pasta portions the night before a long ride. But it’s not just your body that benefits – your mind does too. Exercise is known to release endorphins or ‘feel good factor’ hormones, which can be really helpful at achieving new things or clearing the mind. So, what better way to clear your mind than to break away from the mundane routine of everyday life.
Ditching the stresses of work, bills and responsibility for a proper adventure, the chance to scream like a toddler and get messy; riding a quad is an exhilarating experience, one very few people will ever get to partake in. The health benefits alone should be reason enough to book a trip, but the opportunity to follow that urge for speed that lay dormant for so long should be enough to persuade you. Embark on a once in a lifetime adventure, make memories and enjoy the ride! The riders deserve to take time for themselves every now and again, eat out, scream and let loose. Maybe it’s a girly day/night out that you could do with, or maybe you want to blow off steam from stress accumulated over months without release; throttle therapy is the answer!
Packing Essentials for Your Quad Biking Trip
Marrakech is by far one of the most beautiful cities in Morocco. It is famous for its rich culture, history, and heritage. From souvenir shopping to going out at night, there is so much to do. However, while in Marrakech, there is another activity that is adventurous, fun, and exciting. That activity is quad biking. Imagine riding through the stunning Moroccan sands and vast areas. Exploring the countryside while feeling the thrill of riding a quad is what adds to the adventure.
We encourage you to consider going quad biking while in Marrakech because it is an experience that you will remember forever. However, there are some tips and regulations regarding what to wear for your quad biking trip. Here are some essentials that you must pack for your trip. Pack layers because the weather in Marrakech fluctuates. During the day, the sun is usually shining with little clouds so it really gets hot. However, by the evening, the temperature drops and you will need to wear warmer clothing. While picking layers, make sure you don’t pack bright or white colors because the activities will get dirty. You don’t want to ruin your expensive clothing! Opt for dark colored comfortable clothing that you do not mind getting a bit dirty.
Use comfortable sneakers that can get dirty as well. Since you will be on a quad for some amount of time, you want to make sure your feet are comfortable. If the weather permits, pack sunglasses to wear while quad biking because the sun shines while exploring the dunes. Sunscreen should be a must if you do not want to get a tan or burnt at the same time. Your camera will be one of the most important valuables while quad biking. It will capture all your memorable moments on camera and allow you to relive them again.
Conclusion
Adventuring out into the Hassania desert near Marrakech, Morocco, and quad biking over the sand dunes and rocky pathways is a must-do trip, filled with stunning views of the desert, the surrounding mountains, and the valleys nearby. The ride is exhilarating, with speed sometimes taking over and laughter tingling your belly at what you’re doing. Riding through a Berber settlement, kneeling around a fire, and enjoying mint tea and hot peanuts shared with wildlife make it even more interesting and make the ride that much more memorable. And the route is easy and fun; suitable for anyone who lends a hand to help.
Riding a quad bike for the first time is exhilarating. The power, the height, the unfolding vistas as you pull your head out of the frame and look around: is there a better way to spend a Thursday afternoon? For Christmas this year, Bri and I are trundling across the desert of Marrakech on a quad bike, taking turns driving, as two half-frozen Swiss kids cling on the back. Quad biking is on a lot of teenager’s bucket lists; but what most people imagine is distinctly different; closed tracks in an amusement park with shaky, dull engines. African desert quad biking is nothing like that. Although traveled longer than many years, Morocco is still partially stuck in time. Be surprised: paradise for quad biking adventures everywhere. With sun, sand, and heavenly quad bikes! It may not be as good as a trailer park in Florida, but it gives Funland a good run for their money. A baby elephant in a console. Offensive? Please say so.
