Marrakech is a perfect base to explore. In just one day, you can walk in a Berber village in the High Atlas, swim under a waterfall, eat grilled fish by the ocean or watch the sunset over a stone desert.
Here are our favourite day trips, with the driving time from Marrakech.
1. Imlil and the High Atlas (about 1.5 hours)
Imlil is a mountain village at the foot of Mount Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. Walk through walnut orchards and Berber villages, have lunch with a local family and enjoy the views. It is the best taste of the Atlas Mountains in a single day.
2. Ouzoud Waterfalls (about 2.5 to 3 hours)
The Ouzoud Waterfalls drop around 110 metres into a green canyon. Walk down to the pools, take a small boat ride near the falls and look for the Barbary macaques that live around the site.
3. Essaouira (about 2.5 to 3 hours)
This relaxed, windy port town on the Atlantic has a UNESCO-listed medina, blue fishing boats and some of the best seafood in Morocco. Along the way, stop at an argan oil cooperative and look for the famous goats in the argan trees.
4. The Ourika Valley (about 1 hour)
A green valley with a river, terraced fields and small waterfalls at Setti Fatma. It is an easy and refreshing escape from the city, especially in the hot months.
5. The Agafay desert (about 45 minutes)
Agafay is a stone desert of golden hills, not sand dunes, with the Atlas Mountains on the horizon. Come for a camel or quad ride, a sunset dinner in a camp and a night under the stars without the long drive to the Sahara.
6. Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate (about 4 hours)
A long but spectacular day over the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed ksar seen in many films and series. If you can, turn it into a 2- or 3-day trip with the gorges and the Sahara.
7. Hot air balloon at sunrise
Not a day trip but a morning to remember: you are picked up before dawn, fly over the palm groves and Berber villages with the Atlas behind you, and land for a traditional breakfast. You are back in Marrakech by late morning.
