Highlights of a 4 days desert tour from Fes to Marrakech

Itinerary:

Day 1: Travel over the Atlas Mountains to Merzouga Desert Camp

Today, dump the hustle and bustle of city life for an outdoor adventure in the Sahara Desert. After breakfast, drive to Merzouga, which has long served as a crossroads for northern and southern Morocco. If you have time, there are a few interesting stops along the way. You can see wild Barbary apes in their natural habitat or visit the mountain towns of Azrou and Ifrane, known as “Morocco’s Switzerland.” Take a detour to Erfoud if you’re interested in learning more about nomadic life in Morocco.

Prepare for your desert camel ride once you arrive in Merzouga. Your guide will provide you with all of the necessary clothing and equipment, as well as assist you in becoming acquainted with riding a camel. Once you’re at ease, go to a vantage point to watch the sunset. Then, make your way to your overnight camp, where dinner will be waiting for you in the restaurant tent. After dinner, sit outside your private tent and listen to the camp’s local musicians before retiring. You can play along with them or dance under the desert sky.

Day 2: Merzouga – Erfoud – Explore Todra Gorge

Get up early to catch the sunrise outside your Bedouin tent. Then, meet your driver and depart for Rissani, another market town with a grand entrance. Continue on through the desert, past oases and palmeries, to Tinerhir (Tinghir). You’ll get a good look at the nearby towns that cling to the sides of the green river oasis, which is lined with palm trees. The surrounding desert landscape features spectacular buttes, mesas, and plateaus.

Todra Gorge is a natural limestone gorge in Morocco’s mountains. A dried-up river bed between the gorge’s towering walls allows visitors to walk through the landscape most of the year. Photographers, hikers, and climbers frequent this location. After a scenic drive through the Sahara, check into your hotel and unwind.

Day 3: Drive to Aït Ben Haddou via Ouarzazate

Travel to Ouarzazate, a popular stopping point for Sahara Desert travelers set in a beautiful valley at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Its attractions include a historic 19th-century palace and a museum dedicated to the movies that have used the area as a filming location.

Continue driving toward At Ben Haddou, which is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ksar At Ben Haddou. With the help of some Hollywood make-up, this fortified village appears to be frozen in time, reminiscent of its days as an Almoravid caravanserai (roadside inn and settlement). It has appeared in films such as “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Jesus of Nazareth,” “Jewel of the Nile,” “Gladiator,” and, most recently, “Game of Thrones.” Walk to the top of the kasbah (fortification) to watch the sunset.

Day 4: Head to Marrakech via the High Atlas Mountains

Begin your journey through the High Atlas Mountains. Pass through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, North Africa’s highest major mountain pass, and stop to see Berber villages and take some breathtaking photos.

You’ll soon reach Marrakech, one of Morocco’s four imperial cities. It’s no surprise that Marrakech, also known as the “Red City,” is becoming increasingly popular with tourists, with its bustling souks (markets), flavorful food, and famously welcoming hospitality. It is Morocco’s fourth-largest city, located near the foothills of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains.
