Itinerary:
Day 1: Fes – Atlas Mountains – Merzouga Desert
Today, leave the hustle and excitement of city life behind and go on an outdoor adventure in the Sahara Desert. Drive to Merzouga after breakfast, which has long served as a gateway for northern and southern Morocco. There are a few interesting sites along the way if you have time. Visit the mountain villages of Azrou and Ifrane, renowned as “Morocco’s Switzerland,” to observe wild Barbary apes in their native habitat.
Once you arrive in Merzouga, get ready for a desert camel ride. Your guide will supply you with all of the essential clothes and equipment, as well as help you in becoming acquainted with riding a camel. Once you’re comfortable, go to a high point to view the sunset. Then, proceed to your overnight camp, where dinner will be waiting for you in the restaurant tent. After dinner, sit outside your individual tent and listen to the camp’s local musicians before retiring. You can play along with them or dance under the desert sky.
Day 2: Merzouga Desert – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley
Early in the morning, get up to witness the sunrise from the coziness of your Bedouin tent. Then, meet your driver and travel to Rissani, another market town with a grand entrance. Continue across the desert, going through oasis and palmeries until you arrive at Tinerhir (Tinghir). You’ll get a good look at the surrounding settlements, which cling to the banks of the palm-lined green river oasis. The surrounding desert landscape is stunning, with buttes, mesas, and plateaus.
Drive to Ouarzazate, a popular stopover for Sahara Desert visitors located in a magnificent valley at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Its features include a historical 19th-century palace and a museum dedicated to the movies that have filmed in the area.
Day 3: Head to Marrakech via the High Atlas Mountains
Begin your adventure in At Ben Haddou, which is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Ksar At Ben Haddou. According to some Hollywood make-up, this fortified village appears to be frozen in time, reminiscent of its days as an Almoravid caravanserai (roadside inn and settlement). It has appeared in films such as “Lawrence of Arabia,” “Jesus of Nazareth,” “Jewel of the Nile,” “Gladiator,” and, most recently, “Game of Thrones.” View the sunset from the kasbah’s roof (fortification).
Continue on into the High Atlas Mountains. Pass via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, North Africa’s highest main mountain pass, and stop to explore Berber settlements and capture magnificent photos before continuing on to Marrakech.
